Merriweather Cafe are conscious of their role in the community as a connection between Farmer and Consumer.  Their ethos of sustainable and community oriented business has been the driving force behind many desicisons made since first opening its doors in 2012.  The success of Merriweather has lead to the opening of a second store in New Farm,  King Arthur Cafe, which follows the same values.  With intentions to create a closed loop system, the team established a rooftop composting system where for the past year a healthy worm farm has helped chew through organic waste, using food and coffee bean scraps from the cafe.  The team offer a unique perspective on the food industry, and an insightful perspective on ways we can move toward better ways to design our communities and cities.

The Urban Food Project aims to bring together industry professionals, thinkers and do-ers, with students and interested members of the community to discuss ideas and new ways of designing and living in our cities for a sustainable, ethical and community oriented approach to our food consumption.  The Urban Food Project believes that students across various disciplines have a unique opportunity to innovate and make change.  Students and professionals who have an interest in design, culture and/or environmental studies are encouraged to be involved. However, regardless of your training, all ideas and backgrounds are welcome!  To find out more click
